MedExpress Mountaineer Triathlon a Huge Success

The first MedExpress Mountaineer Triathlon was a huge success. The June 26 th event sponsored by MedExpress Urgent Care sm brought professional, Olympic and amateur athletes from around the globe to Morgantown, WV, one of America’s best small cities.

The Half-Ironman competition started with a 1.2 mile swim in the Monongahela River, transitioned to a 56-mile bicycle ride, and completed with a 13.1 mile run through Morgantown’s downtown and West Virginia University’s (WVU) campus.

In its first year of competition, the MedExpress Mountaineer Triathlon exceeded expectations. Brought here because of the great layout for such an event, and to showcase the highlights of the high-growth area in and around Morgantown, WV, the event is already being considered for larger exposure.

“The success of the event complemented by the satisfaction of the athletes with the course has already grabbed the attention of the officials for the Olympic qualifiers,” said MedExpress Physician and triathlon competitor Dr. Vinnie Monseau. The MedExpress Mountaineer Triathlon will not only become a reality for a second year, it is now in the running to be a qualifier for the Olympic Triathlon.

MedExpress Urgent Care sm made the early decision to be the event’s title sponsor. “It was a no-brainer – the relationships between the triathlon and the core principles that motivate the MedExpress team were amazing. Hard work, excellence, good health, being the best you can be – these are all things common on a triathlon course and in a MedExpress clinic” said Dr. Frank Alderman, MedExpress CEO and Physician.

In addition to sponsoring the event, MedExpress Urgent Care sm donated its services by staffing the medical tent and providing all of the medical supplies necessary for Great Care Fast sm for the athletes. Nurses, physicians, physician’s assistants and office staff all helped out to extend medical services to overheated, exhausted or injured competitors. Many athletes were grateful for the services; the temperature was in the 90s and humidity was high.

Thousands of fans lined the course sidelines and enjoyed the competition. The Morgantown Convention and Visitors Bureau promoted the event and is excited about the impact it made on the community. MedExpress will again be the title sponsor for the 2006 event and looks forward to working with the Chamber and to helping Morgantown continue to be recognized as one of America’s best small cities.
