MedExpress Urgent Care Physician Receives Prestigious AwardDr. C. David Burkland, District Medical Director at MedExpress Urgent Care, was honored with the Excellence in Emergency Medicine Award by the West Virginia chapter of the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP).
Dr. Burkland was recognized for his decades of mentoring medical students and residents, including student nurses, physician assistants, EMTs, and paramedics. In his extensive career, Dr. Burkland has been on the state Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) faculty, and a national representative for International Trauma Life Support (ITLS), formerly Basic Trauma Life Support (BTLS), which he led in West Virginia and helped to establish in other states when the program was started.
He was department chair of Emergency Medicine at Wheeling Hospital, where he served on several hospital committees, and participated in, or spearheaded, patient care and quality improvement initiatives. Dr. Burkland is a past president of the West Virginia Chapter of ACEP and served the organization for many years.
Dr. Burkland is currently District Medical Director at MedExpress Urgent Care, which has centers in both West Virginia and Pennsylvania, and prides itself on providing exceptional customer service in a welcoming environment.
The WV ACEP commends Dr. Burkland for being “recognized state-wide as an expert in Quality Assurance and Customer Service, with an emphasis on patient centered care, which has inspired those with whom he has worked, as well as those he has taught.” He authored the chapter on Quality Assurance and Continuous Process Improvement for Howell’s Emergency Medicine,
Vol. 1, published in 1998.
“Dr. Burkland genuinely cares about his patients and his fellow employees,” said Dr. Bryan Stuchell, Chief Medical Officer at MedExpress. “We are privileged to have him on our team– he’s a great mentor for the physicians and providers staffed at each of our centers.”
According to WV ACEP, “his current passion has been studying the beneficial physiological effects and positive health benefits of joy and satisfaction in one’s workplace.” Dr. Burkland works throughout several centers and will soon spend time in MedExpress’ next center, in Wheeling, WV. The projected opening date for the Wheeling site, which is in Dr. Burkland’s hometown, is late June or early July.
The Excellence in Emergency Medicine Award is given annually to an individual who meets the requirements of having commitment, accomplishments, and dedication to practicing Emergency Medicine, and who continually brings an “entrepreneurial and innovative approach to the field, with patient care at the forefront of their motivation.”
